Genome the Autobiography of a Species - Free Essay Example
This semester, I have read a good number of books about biology and different biological processes. This book out of all the books I have read was the worst in terms of entertainment value. However, I learned more from this book than I have from all the other books I have read this semester. The writing was dry, but the information was full and informative. Ive probably erased and re-written this paper 3 or 4 times because there is so much information to cover. The genome is a wonderful thing and can really make a difference once we understand what it is and how it works. The minor variances between all human DNA can predict our futures and how we will be years from now. The first chapter I am going to touch on is the chapter talking about genetic disease. This chapter was interesting for me to read because of my own personal genome. Many years ago, I took place in a study about skin cancer and was told I have the P16 gene which increases the chance I have for skin cancer. Later in life, my chances for pancreatic cancer will also increase. The chapter on genetic disease talks about ABO blood typing to discuss disease. Specifically, people with O blood type are more susceptible to Cholera but they are still around today because their O blood type makes them more resistant to many other strains of disease. While O blood type isnt a disease, it does indicate that our genome can affect our overall health for good or bad. Throughout this chapter the author does talk about how our genome affects us but does not seem to discuss how we can affect our genome. It almost seems to be from the authors point of view that if you have certain genetic coding there is nt anything you can do to change that. I personally challenge this idea to an extent. While you cant change your genetic coding, you can affect the outcomes of your coding to an extent. Take for example my genome. I know that I have increased risk for cancer. If I took the outlook of the author, Id do nothing about it and just accept my fate. But we know that healthy living can significantly decrease the risks for cancer. By me choosing to live healthy, I can absolutely affect my genes and decrease my chances for cancer. I think that the author misses this point but does make other great points when discussing how a genome can affect our health. The next chapter that really challenge my viewpoints was the chapter on personality. The author shares a story about how 3 generations of a family of were all criminals. Upon further analysis it was discovered that all 3 men shared the same gene which gave them unusual Serotonin levels. While the author states this isnt a crime gene, it does indicate how our personality will be affected by our brain chemistry. This challenged my idea of personality because I have personal experience with changing personality. My natural personality is one of quiet and introverted behavior. In high school, I was very unpopular and only had one close friend which was hard on me. I realized that to be successful or get anywhere in life I had to change my personality and be more friendly and outgoing. Since the years of high school, I have become very outgoing, friendly, and have made many more friends than I had in my first 18 years of life combined. I understand that the author also agrees with the belief that our genes do not make up everything that we are or will be. However, there were several instances of the author indicating that people were more likely to believe their genome over everything else. I think this is a big caution that genetic analyzation should take. If we tell someone you have a gene that will make you a criminal they are more likely to think thats just the way it is rather than do something so they arent a criminal. For this book, my major critical analysis and thought is that our genome affects us to a great degree, but we shouldnt let our genome dictate or control us. After reading this book, the author does touch on this briefly in some chapters, but skims over it in others. This indicates to me that the author believes there are certain things that can be controlled by our actions, and others that cannot. Ive never been a fan of the idea that you are helpless to your genome. Everyone has a say no matter how small in who they are, what happens to them, and the types of things they must deal with. Its just a matter of making the right choices to mitigate the impact your genome may have on you.

Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures - 1597 Words
Name February 7, 2013 Professor Essay #1: Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures William Osler once said ââ¬Å"Medicine is the science of uncertainty and the art of probability.â⬠While this quote was said nearly one-hundred years ago, it still holds the same weight as is once did. In Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam, this quote is shown to not only be true in regards to medicine, but also for people as a whole; even so there are many factors that contribute to a personââ¬â¢s personality early on that can be traced to decisions and personality traits later in their lives. One of these factors is the amount of interaction and influence a personââ¬â¢s family has with them. In Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, there are two extreme examplesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She is totally fine with cutting open a penis, perhaps a little zealous, but for the right brain she has to look in the book. Mingââ¬â¢s name is very indicative of her personality. She is brief and to-the-point; she has to time to mess around. Along with the negative effects of an overly-involved family, positive features came out of the situation as well. Firstly, her performance on schoolwork is very highly regarded. She even manages to surpass Karlââ¬â¢s success. It took Karl two attempts to get into medical school, while it only took Ming one. She was able to achieve this almost entirely because of her familyââ¬â¢s involvement. Her family pushed her to be tutored by Karl, and Karl managed to unintentionally push her away from everything except schoolwork. Due to Karlââ¬â¢s abuse Ming never fully matured socially, and stayed away from being sexual. Ming was handicapped socially; although she liked Fitzpatrick she was not sure how to go about talking to him. At one point she asked herself, ââ¬Å"was that the kind of thing people said?â⬠and admitted that she ââ¬Å"often stumbled across humorâ⬠(Lam 2). This can be seen as a positive effect because she was able to fully focus on her schoolwork. She also shied away from anyt hing sexual, somewhat replacing her sexuality with grades. After her and Fitzgerald got their tests back, they went through the notion of ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll show you mine if you show me yours.â⬠Another positive effect of the extreme family

The Government Of The United States - 1516 Words
From Concept to Law According to The White House website, prior to the Constitution, the government of the United States was known to be practically paralyzed and ineffectual, due to being exercised by the Articles of Confederation, which established a ââ¬Å"firm league of friendshipâ⬠between the states, and vested most power in a Congress of the Confederation. This power was, however, extremely limited ââ¬â the central government conducted diplomacy and made war, set weights and measures, was the final arbiter of disputes between the states, but it could not raise any funds itself, it was entirely dependent on the states themselves for the money necessary to operate (whitehouse.gov, n.d.). Decision making was not easy to accomplish. States sentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The law making process can be very long and frustrating. In the United States House of Representatives website, the process is described as follows: Laws begin as ideas. First, a representative sponsor s a bill. The bill is then assigned to a committee for study. If released by the committee, the bill is put on a calendar to be voted on, debated or amended. If the bill passes by simple majority (218 of 435), the bill moves to the Senate. In the Senate, the bill is assigned to another committee and, if released, debated and voted on. Again, a simple majority (51 of 100) passes the bill. Finally, a conference committee made of House and Senate members works out any differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The resulting bill returns to the House and Senate for final approval. The Government Printing Office prints the revised bill in a process called enrolling. The President has 10 days to sign or veto the enrolled bill (Representatives, n.d.). Passing the Affordable Care Act represented such process, which started in 2008, even before President Obama won the election, when he said, ââ¬Å"On health care reform, the American people are too often offered two extre mes ââ¬â government-run health care with higher taxes or letting the insurance companies operate without rules. â⬠¦ I believe both of these

The Suicide Of Canad Teen Suicide - 1572 Words
Teen Suicide in Canada In the modern, technological society we live in today, information can be shared instantaneously. This can usually be seen as a positive, by providing much needed information to the public in times of a crisis, or joyous celebrations of achievements. However, in contrast with the positive aspects there are also negative aspects. Cyber bullying of individuals and incessant harassment of individuals online has become a major problem in societies across the world, leading to suicide of individuals. People hide behind computer screens and diminish people, by spreading rumours, photos and videos in an attempt to humiliate others. This paper will discuss the views of two components of Durkheimââ¬â¢s theory of suicide (Egoistic and Anomic) and how they are the most dominant forms of suicide today and how they link to the events in our current society leading to the increase in teen suicides. This theory will be used to attempt to answer why teen suicide is on the r ise. Durkheimââ¬â¢s theories will be emphasised by relating his theory of suicide to two recent cases of teen suicide in Canada; Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd- both were cyber bullied to the point of taking their own lives. These two cases will be used as examples to reinforce the issue of teen suicide today. In todayââ¬â¢s society, technology has allowed us to communicate with others in a number of ways which, on face value, gives the impression that we are a more social, tightknit society that
The Country Of Belgium An Ambitious King Of The Conquest...
In 1876, no more than 10 percent of Africa was under European rule, but by 1900 more than 90 percent was controlled by a European country. Belgium was about as strong as the three less dominant Western powers of Portugal, Italy, and Germany, but was able to manipulate people, prices, and circumstances to level itself with those major powers above it such as Britain and France, who worked together to draw out their own maps of the ââ¬Å"dark continentâ⬠to prevent conflict in the midst of the conquest of Africa. Europeans had been travelling to and trading with this mysterious land for centuries, but had never attempted to conquer the area beyond the ivory and golden coasts until prompted by both great sins and great opportunities. While mostâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the 1840ââ¬â¢s, a British missionary and explorer named David Livingstone made the trek across the blank spaces intricately decorated on his map of Africa and thoroughly documented who and what he experie nced. Not only did he discuss the variety of life, but the variety of cruelties, as well. Particularly focusing on the Arab and African slave trades, Livingstoneââ¬â¢s detailed account of his adventures became the hot topic of European conversation, as slavery had been banned in most of Europe by this time. In an underpopulated continent like Africa, a groupââ¬â¢s population was what mattered and the leaderââ¬â¢s influence was key. Because it was population that seemed to represent a groupââ¬â¢s power, the slave trade was dominant and focused on the control of influence. The political leaders of the West though, specifically King Leopold II of Belgium, were attentive to the details regarding the natural and human resources this land offered. Because several different European countries all wanted to control much of Africa, European and US leaders met in Berlin, Germany in 1884 to decide the fate of the continent. These leaders were able to transform the rage of Europe into support of
